Welcome to the official homepage for the town of Kaiyo, home of a “World’s First.”

The world’s first vehicle capable of running on both train tracks and normal roadways - hence its name: the Dual Mode Vehicle (DMV) - kicked into gear here on Christmas Day 2021. Operated by the Asa Coast Railway, the DMV connects the towns of Kaiyo and Toyo in neighboring Kochi prefecture, bringing a new image to Kaiyo as home of an innovative “World’s First”!

The town of Kaiyo has many admirable qualities. The air is deliciously fresh, and the tap water, sourced from the Kaifu River, is purer than bottled mineral water. Sweetfish anglers from as far as the Kansai region come to fish in the river’s crystal clear streams. Kaiyo attracts many with its plentiful harvest from both the sea and the surrounding mountains, rich with fresh seafood such as Japanese spiny lobster and amberjack as well as Japan’s top-tier regional variety of chicken, Awa Odori. With picturesque scenery of the rising sun hovering over scattered islands, the town boasts a relaxing and peaceful environment that makes Kaiyo the envy of city-dwellers. It is no wonder that Kaiyo has one of the lowest suicide rates nationwide.

We have recently made great efforts to deliver cutting edge IT infrastructure to junior high schools as part of our engagement with the Global and Innovation Gateway for All (GIGA) School initiative. Furthermore, Kaiyo is promoting global education and other such child-centric policies, striving to give students the ability to speak conversational English by the time they graduate from junior high school. These endeavors, in tandem with the DMV, convey that although Kaiyo may be a small rural town, it has access to the same resources as a larger city.

Both the townspeople and myself were raised here in the warm and open atmosphere of Kaiyo and are eager to share it with you. So when the bustle of urban life gets to be too much, we welcome you with open arms!
